Modelling

Effective teacher modelling plays a vital role in supporting student progress; it is an opportunity to watch the expert demonstrate what an outcome or process looks like. Put simply, it enables our teachers to ensure students ‘see before doing’, address misconceptions, set the right level of challenge and scaffold learning. Lessons at Summerhill are planned around the principles below to ensure opportunities for effective learning are maximised:

•Processes are modelled in small, step-by-step chunks
•Don’t assume students automatically know!
•Live model answers in real-time to show the mechanics
•Invite students to comment on and critique models- deconstruct together
•Plan models in advance
•Share various models with students, encourage side-by-side comparisons
•Exemplify the language you want students to use via your modelling
•Encourage students to share their own models
