The Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum at Summerhill:

  • is balanced, relevant and differentiated
  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all students
  • prepares students for the responsibilities and opportunities they will face in adult life
  • is delivered in a variety of ways which recognise that not all students learn in the same way
  • provides a seamless pathway from primary through to education post 16
  • provides opportunities for students to work at a pace best suited to their own needs
  • covers the full content of the National Curriculum, plus extra material that we believe is important to students’ future
  • never stands still. Our curriculum is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our students.

Our timetable is based on 6 periods per day, 30 periods per week:

  • Students in year 10 and 11 follow 4 options courses, totalling 12 periods
  • Students in year 9 follow 3 options courses, totalling 6 periods
  • Students in year 8 choose to study an additional Modern Foreign Language or to reinforce their essential literacy and numeracy skills

Global Learning includes Citizenship, British Values, Sex and Relationships Education, Healthy Living and KS4 Religious Education
