Differentiation

Learning at Summerhill is characterised by setting challenging and aspirational targets for students, whatever their ability level. We recognise that each student has their own individual needs and that knowing our students well is key to providing the right stretch and support for them. Teachers use a variety of strategies to help students achieve, become personally invested in and take ownership of their learning. Our guiding principles for effective differentiation are:

•Know your learners!
•All students should be engaged in a ‘healthy struggle’- the point where learning happens
•Set the bar high for ALL students (‘plan to the top’)
•Differentiate downwards. Support students in reaching the Learning Objective whatever their starting point
•Be responsive to those who need support in reaching the challenge
•Model learning and scaffold practice
•Adapt questioning to stretch and support
