Assessment and Feedback

Feedback is an essential part of effective learning. It helps students understand the subject being studied and gives them clear guidance on how to improve their learning. It can improve a student's confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning. That’s why, at Summerhill, we are committed to engaging students in a meaningful process of feedback that enhances learning and improves assessment performance. Feedback can take many forms across the curriculum but always has the same aim: to move learning forward. Students are very much part of this process; written feedback always requires a student response, to ensure it ‘feeds forward’ the learning. Teachers follow the principles below to ensure effective feedback is at the heart of all learning:

•Embed assessment and feedback in every part of the T&L process
•Ensure feedback is timely and precise
•Make effective use of formative assessment- avoid finding out later they didn’t get it!
•Use feedback to inform ongoing learning- be responsive!
•Allow students time to respond to feedback- get DIRTy!
•Encourage peer and self-assessment
•Live Mark where possible- it’s a game changer!
•Consider the use of whole class feedback
