At Summerhill, we value reading as one of the foundations of education. Our focus on reading for pleasure and empowerment spans across the curriculum, ensuring that children understand the importance and relevance of reading in each subject.
Not only does reading have a focus in lessons, but we also give students the opportunity to use their reading skills in themed house competitions, ran by the House Championship Team. Each March is marked as a ‘Reading Month’ to coincide with World Book Day; this year’s competitions included a Pub Quiz style competition themed on Myths, Legends, Fairytales and Folklore, Bananagrams and World Book Day Staff Costumes. Previous years have featured a Hunger Games-themed Capture the Flag, a whodunnit-themed escape room and a Scrabble tournament!
Every day there are opportunities for students to pick up a book, get stuck in to a new story and be rewarded for doing so! We regularly reward students with book giveaways, opportunities to meet authors and new and exciting challenges to keep the reading community thriving.
