Year 6 free reading book and author visits

Each year we welcome our new intake to Summerhill with a free reading book during Induction week. This links to a visit from the author of the book in the first term. It is a great opportunity for students to embrace our reading culture even before they join us!

Last year students enjoyed the fabulous ‘Tilly and the Book Wanderers’ by Anna James. Anna spent a morning with Year Seven students talking about her life as an author, answering questions and inspiring students’ own ambitions as writers.

This year we are delighted to give away copies of ‘The Detention Detectives’ by Lis Jardine. This is a particularly special event for us; Lis is an ex-Summerhill student who has since embarked on a career writing fiction for young people. As well as providing copies of the book to our new intake, students will have an opportunity to meet not only Lis, but also author Carolyn Ward- another ex-Summerhill student turned author! Carolyn will join Lis to talk about her book ‘Bella Bright and the Ghost Game’. It is an honour to welcome two Summerhill students who have gone on to enjoy success as writers and we are sure our students will find the visit inspiring.
