RLSS Courses - NRASTC & NPLQ Gen 10

We are an Approved Training Centre for the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) and offer the following courses at Summerhill School.

National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) including Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Award

The NRASTC is a supervision and rescue qualification for swimming teachers and individuals working on the poolside or in the water during programmed activities, such as a swimming lesson.

The course includes swimming pool and class management, intervention rescue and emergency action, CPR and First Aid.  Candidates will need to be able to swim a minimum of 25m, climb out of the pool without help or using steps or ladders and be able to surface dive to pick up a manikin from the pool floor.  The deepest part of our pool is 1.8m.

The three sections of the Award must all be successfully passed:

  • The Teacher, swimming pool and class management
  • Intervention, rescue and emergency action
  • CPR, AED and First Aid

Assessment takes place at the end of the course.  Once the qualification is successfully achieved it is valid for two years.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) Gen 10

The RLSS UK NPLQ is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the United Kingdom and Ireland and is also internationally recognised.  The NPLQ is suitable for anyone looking to work as a Lifeguard or as a starting point for a career in the leisure industry.

The NPLQ is a great addition to any CV or higher education application, and from May 2024, NPLQ Gen 10 carries 8 UCAS Tariff points.

The NPLQ covers all elements of pool rescue techniques, lifeguarding theory, First Aid and CPR.  The course is physically demanding and will include swimming set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the pool (our pool is 1.8m at its deepest).  Training and assessment for the NPLQ is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification.

Assessment for the NPLQ takes place at the end of the course.

Upon qualifying with the NPLQ the certificate is valid for two years from the date of successful completion.

To attend the course candidates need to be 16 years of age at the time of their assessment and be able to:

  • Jump / dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool (the deepest part of our pool is 1.8m)
  • Climb out of the pool unaided without using the steps
