Summerhill School is very proud of the excellent facilities we are able to offer students, staff and the local community. In September 2003 we moved into a new building, which was constructed under a Public Finance Initiative (PFI). Our private partners are Newmount. Within the partnership the management of the site facilities are now the responsibility of MITIE PFI Ltd.
The school accommodation has been designed so that subject areas are clustered together. This enables collaborative work to take place with subject teams and maximises the use of equipment and resources.
In addition to subject classrooms the school has an extensive range of specialist rooms to support the curriculum including Science labs, a Drama area, Design & Technology rooms offering specialist areas for computer aided design and computer aided manufacture (CAD CAM), wood, metal and graphics as well a well equipped rooms for Food Technology and Textiles. Art also has specialist classrooms including a pottery area. Music enjoys not only specialist classrooms but a number of music practice rooms and recording studio.
The school has excellent indoor and outdoor sports facilities allowing the school to offer a wide range of sporting activities not only to support the curriculum but also provides opportunities for after school activities and community usage. We are very proud of our 25m x 4 lane pool which provides excellent opportunities for Summerhill students, our primary partner schools and the highly successful Summerhill Swim Scheme.
Our major project for the next academic year Is an all weather surface to support not only the curriculum but also provide sporting opportunities for the local community and social opportunities for students during break and lunchtimes.
The school continues to ensure that the technologies in the building are extensive and up to date. Every classroom has an interactive whiteboard and this technology is used throughout the curriculum to support the delivery of lessons. We have a range of computer suites including specialist computer classrooms, a Learning Centre and a range of small clusters in the ‘streets’ to enable learning to take place outside the classroom. We have also invested in ‘Apple Mac’ technology to support Media Studies.
At Summerhill we continue to strive to maximise the use of our building to enhance learning for all and to provide an exciting environment for everyone to work in.
Students are confident learners who demonstrate an excellent willingness to take on new challenges. They respond extraordinarily well to such opportunities and have exemplary attitudes to learning.OFSTED report, November 2012
